Facebook announces drastic changes to the News Feed

Facebook, currently the largest social network, with over 2.06 billion users, announced that there will be huge changes coming up to the News Feed.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and founder of Facebook, posted: “We feel a responsibility to make sure our services aren’t just fun to use, but also good for people’s well-being […].

“Based on this, we’re making a major change to how we build Facebook. I’m changing the goal I give our product teams from focusing on helping you find relevant content to helping you have more meaningful social interactions.”

What does that mean for companies?

Firstly, this means that there will be less content shown from publishers or businesses. Pages where posts do not get any engagement (e.g. Likes, Comments etc.) will notice the biggest decrease.

Is it still possible to see posts from other sites like businesses or publisher that do not create any conversation?

Yes, there will be an option to change your preferences. Thereby, you can ensure to see all the posts from your favorite page.

Does that mean my page will disappear from screens?

No, it does not mean it will disappear. But due to the changes, it will not be shown as frequently as before unless it gets engagement.

Is there any way to increase my engagement rating?

Interaction with people, like customers, and quality content, which is useful to the user, will also increase the engagement rate. Product advertising will not work unless you specifically tailor it to the right audience.

When are the changes taking place?

Mark Zuckerberg continued to say “We started making changes in this direction last year, but it will take months for this new focus to make its way through all our products. The first changes you’ll see will be in News Feed”.

Consequently, you will not notice the changes immediately but eventually businesses will need to do adapt their strategy to get engagement on their posts.

Facebook will be more user-orientated, meaning that personal focused posts will always be in the foreground. Zuckerberg summarised  ”I believe that will be good for our community and our business over the long term too”.
